生粋のニューヨーカーであるソル･ユーリックの小説（1965）を、ユーリックと監督ヒル、『ナイトホークス』『イントルーダー／怒りの翼』の脚本家デヴィッド･シェイバーが70年代後半のニューヨークに舞台を移して脚色。製作は『リーサル･ウェポン』『ダイ･ハード』等のヒットメイカー･コンビ、ローレンス･ゴードン（故人）とジョエル･シルヴァー。
撮影は『ランボー』『ストリート･オブ･ファイヤー』のアンドリュー･ラズロ。音楽は『デリンジャー』『ザナドゥ』のバリー･デ･ヴォーゾン。音響エンジニア（サウンドデザイン／リレコーディング･ミキサー）は『タクシードライバー』『ハロウィン』のテックス･ルドロフ。
