原作はビートニク文学の最高峰とされる、ウィリアム･バロウズの傑作『裸のランチ』。本作はその伝説的名作が如何にして書き上げられたかについての、クローネンバーグならではの幻想譚。主演は『バカルー･バンザイの8次元ギャラクシー』『ロボコップ』のピーター･ウェラー。
撮影は『戦慄の絆』以降のクローネンバーグ作品や『ロッキー･ホラー･ショー』『スター･ウォーズ／帝国の逆襲』で知られるピーター･サシツキー。音楽はクローネンバーグ作品には欠かせない存在の名劇伴作家ハワード･ショア、そしてジャズ･サックス奏者オーネット･コールマン。音響エンジニアは『12モンキーズ』のピーター･マックスウェル、『月の輝く夜に』のドン･ホワイト、『暗闇にベルが鳴る』のデヴィッド･アップルビー。
