わずか三歳にして清朝最後の皇帝の座についた愛新覚羅溥儀の数奇な生涯を、巨匠ベルトリッチが中後に一大ロケーションを敢行して描いた大河ドラマ。主演は『イヤー･オブ･ザ･ドラゴン』のジョン･ローン。共演にジョアン･チェン、ピーター･オトゥール、坂本龍一。
撮影は本作と『地獄の黙示録』『レッズ』でオスカーに輝く光の魔術師ヴィットリオ･ストラーロ。オスカー受賞の音楽は坂本龍一、デヴィッド･バーン、スー･ソン。音響エンジニアは『統計じかけのオレンジ』『エイリアン』『バットマン』のビル･ロウ、『シャイニング』『イングリッシュ･ペイシェント』『U-571』のアイヴァン･シャーロック。
